Maurice Grigsby peacefully passed away in the morning of April 4, 2013 in Portland, Oregon. He was 93 years old; he passed one day short of his 94th birthday. Maurice was a man of integrity and strength, but he was not one to be aggressive or overbearing. He will be remembered for his tenderness, his love and for his compassion.
Maurice was born on April 5, 1919 in Linden, Texas to parents Flora Bell and Emmett Grigsby. He grew up in Texas and graduated high school there. As a young man he enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served his country during World War II. During the war he traveled to France, Italy and Southern Africa.
After his honorable discharge he traveled by train to Portland, Oregon to attend the Molar Barber College. He excelled at school and upon graduation began his lifelong career as a barber. Often times his clients would affectionately call him Mr. Maurice and he soon developed a loyal clientele much do in part to his impeccable customer service skills and his easy going manner. Maurice found it important to give back to his community and after he closed up his shop for the day he spent many evenings and weekends giving free haircuts to elderly in nursing homes or to folks down on their luck and out of work. His true character showed in this often time private moments; he gave as an individual in a very personal and reserved way.
Maurice is survived by his treasured daughters: Wanda Flemming, Margaret A. Grigsby and Marsha Grigsby. Grandchildren: DeAndre Flemming, Jada Williams and Laela Divine and a niece, Shirley Cuff and a nephew Willie Horsley. He will also be deeply missed by his extended family at Harvest Homes where he lived for many years.
Maurice lived his life with a quiet strength and determination. He has left a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure to know him.
