Mary was a true original and fondly known as “The Kiss Lady” due to her love of handing out Hershey’s Chocolate Kisses to one and all.
Mary was born in Deer Lodge, Montana on November 1, 1923 to Ann M. and Rufus W. Magette. She moved to Portland with her mother and older brother Robert in 1927, after the sudden death of her father.
Mary graduated with honors from Grant High school and attended the University of Idaho. During her junior year of college she joined the United States Navy in the midst of WWII. After the war Mary returned to Portland where she was employed as an insurance underwriter and church secretary.
Memberships included Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, Association of Professional Insurance Women, Columbia Edgewater Country Club and Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Harold S. Hays. She is survived by a step-son, Frederick Hays of Anchorage, Alaska and numerous extended family members and friends.
A memorial service and reception will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Portland on Thursday, November 17, 2011 beginning at 2:00 pm.
Remembrances may be made to Legacy Hospice Services or to a charity of choice.
A private burial service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery.
