Mary Anne (Grycko) Harny was born on September 18, 1928 in Portland, Or. to Michael Sr. and Martha Grycko. She was raised in Clatskanie, Or. with her five siblings. Mary graduated from Clatskanie High School and went on to take some writing and painting courses in college.
In 1947 Mary exchanged wedding vows with Stanley Harny. The couple had three children, Dennis, Christie, and John. They were married for over 28 years.
Mary worked primarily in the dairy industry as a bookkeeper for Darigold and Mayflower. She also spent some time as a CNA when she lived in Portland.
Mary was a great writer, and chronicled her life in a series of journals and diaries. She enjoyed reading, gardening, crocheting, cooking, and baking. Mary always sought to learn new things. She enjoyed walking, and walked all over Portland during the 40 years she lived there. She would walk down to Fred Meyer near her home, often twice a day. There she would visit with the staff, who all knew her by name.
Mary passed away on October 13, 2011 in Longview, Wa. She is survived by her former spouse, Stanley Harny; children, Dennis Harny and Christie Larson; grandchildren, Lara, Ian, Mindy, Madeline, Jake, and Alyssa; and great-grandchildren, Aidan, Liam, Hailey, Hayden, and Emma. She was preceded in death by her son, John Harny, and grandsons, Josh and Adam.
