There was nothing better than going over to the house in Laurelhurst and getting to snoop on whatever she was creating in the kitchen. Often I would be visiting and find her surrounded by freshly baked pies. One time, I even got to be her assistant. I never got to eat any of the pies, she would bake them for members of her church that were ill or going through tough times. She was the baker and Hardy was her delivery boy. We always got a chuckle about the Attorney General making pie deliveries. 

She and Hardy both encouraged my love of Oregon political history and would find buttons and things while cleaning out drawers and give them to me. One day I was over for lunch with Hardy and she said she wanted to give me first dibs on something. She took me out to the garage and pointed up in the rafters and there were all of Hardy's lawn signs from his legislative campaigns back in the 70s. "Take as many as you can, and tell your mother I'm sorry". I took like ten of them. There were at least 100 if not more. She called them the 'headstone lawn signs' because they resembled tall headstones. For the next year, she kept trying to unload more signs on me. 'You could build yourself a fort with them or add on to the house' and we would just laugh. Every time I would go over after that my mother would tell me 'don't let her give you any more signs!' 

Oh, I am deeply saddened by Maryann’s passing. I remember going to Prineville years ago to help her with her ailing mother. We have been friends for years and she always made me laugh and feel so good after I left her presence. I so enjoyed her dinners at her house, visiting with her children , remembering her bright pink couch, cookies, delicious dinners and gatherings of so many different friends!  I had breast cancer in 1979 and one day she delivered a marvelous sausage stew and cornbread! I still cook this and often give it to friends as Maryanne did .  I loved this very special, kind, thoughtful lady. I haven’t seen her very often in the last few years and I regret that. I have thought of her so often and when  Chris called I just sat down and cried. She touched my life in so many ways.! I feel so blessed that this beautiful and kind woman was in my life all these years!  Oh, one laugh was when she had to go to Saks on her way to Hardy being sworn in as Attorney General . She had bought a beautiful dress and the plastic attachment to prevent thefts was on her dress! The sales manager had to open the store!  Having a stolen dress attachment wouldn’t be the best to have on one’s dress while you stood next to your husband, the Attorney General.  Goodbye Maryann. I will always remember you. See you in heaven!  Sally

Mary Ann and I met in 1970 when I began to practice law with Hardy.  Friends ever since, I greatly valued Mary Ann’s passion for justice and her steadfast commitment to All Saints.   My wife, Therese, and I have fond memories of Mary Ann and Hardy’s visit to our home in Canada a few months before Hardy died, and it was a privilege to work with Mary Ann on the selection of Scripture for Hardy’s service.  Our last time together was a lovely breakfast at one her favourite spots.  A great woman.  Blessings to all the family in this time of loss.

Mary Ann and Hardy's and my friendship began in 1968, when Hardy was on the executive committee of the Multnomah County Democratic Central Committee and I was a precinct committee woman.  Over the years, Mary Ann and I became close, sharing much laughter, and quite a few tears, recipes, cooking competitively, both of us interested in the performing arts, supporters of Young Audiences.  I miss her deeply and I grieve with Chris, John and Hardy III.
