August 19, 1933 – December 29, 2021
Marilyn Katherine Ochs O’Neill passed away peacefully the evening of December 29th, 2021. She was born August 19, 1933 in Portland Oregon to Bernard and Katherine Ochs. Marilyn grew up in North Portland with older brothers Ron and Bob and younger sister Barbara. She attended Holy Redeemer grade school and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy. After graduation she worked in downtown Portland for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph. As a young person Marilyn enjoyed skiing and trips to the beach with friends. She married Lawrence James O’Neill on May 21, 1955. They were married 49 years until his passing in 2004. Marilyn and Larry built their home in NE Portland and raised their three children, Matt (Teresa), John (Gael) and Mary (Todd) in the home she cherished and loved for over 60 years. Marilyn was an avid gardener, seamstress, collector of antiques and an excellent cook. She enjoyed family vacations to the Oregon Coast and Canada. Her greatest joy was to gather at the dining room table with her family to share a meal, a glass of wine, stories, and laughter. She was quick witted and well read, reading being a lifelong passion since childhood. Marilyn also loved spending time with her grandchildren; Katherine, Kevin, Anna and Tyler. She became a great grandmother in 2020 when Raegan was born and delighted in seeing pictures and videos. Our family was blessed to have her as our Mom, she will be missed.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Larry; siblings, Ron, Bob and Barbara. Graveside service will be at Mt. Calvary, Monday January 10 at 10:00. Covid protocols limit size of gathering, please email motrr@comcast.net if you would like to attend. A celebration of her life will be planned when we can safely gather in her remembrance.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to SMART Reading of Oregon or your local library.
