Loraine was my favorite Social Work Professor. She led out study abroad to South Africa and my life was changed forever. She was a good friend. We were in Qwa ZuluNatal at the Amangwe Village. My heart was opened up that day with all the children and it’s thanks to Loraine! She was such an amazing lady! She will be missed dearly. Praying for Jake, Summer and Lizel (sp?) Fly high sweet lady!

I met Lorraine in graduate school at Western Michigan University (WMU) in the mid 1990's and we immediately became good friends. I don't know anyone who enjoyed a good laugh more than she; and she immediately took to my somewhat off-beat sense of humor.  She and I worked together on a few assessment projects at WMU, and as always she was generous and kind in sharing her expertise.  The day she left Kalamazoo I cried.  She is such a valued friend. She is one in a million. Even though we hadn't seen each other since her days in Kalamazoo, we kept in touch and we talked often.  She was one of the best friends that I ever had. I'm glad that her suffering is over; and I know that wherever she is so much better now because she is there.

Sending aloha and caring thoughts to Dr. Marais' family and friends. She was a kindhearted director during my Social Work training 2013-2015. I only wish I'd have been able to take a course with her - only wonderful words about Dr. Marais from classmates who were fortunate to do so.

I am so sad to hear of the passing of our friend and colleague, Dr. Lorraine Marais.  You were a vital and inspirational addition to our faculty at the School of Social Work, Radford University. Your joyous and colorful personality brightened our halls and inspired our students and faculty alike.  Your conviction and bravery further inspired us all as social workers. My very deepest condolences to your family and friends.  The world has lost a bright light but heaven has gained a wonderful angel.  Rest in love and peace.

My Deepest Condolences to the Marais Family.....She was the most welcoming, kind and knowledgeable Professor and Director at HPU. I am so saddened by this news. To her family and friends my deepest condolences. Dr. Marais was surely a beautiful soul and one of a kind. I will never forget her kind and joyful heart. She encouraged me in so many ways through her humility and passion for Social Work. I always found myself admiring her dedication to her work and the field. All while having such a fun loving spirit for her students, she surely touched the lives of many. May her soul rest in peace. 

Lorraine was a treasured colleague during my time at HPU.  She lived her life with courage, compassion, determination, and kindness.  I knew I could always depend on her to provide a calm sense of perspective even in the most tumultuous times.  She was an extraordinary person who never thought of herself that way, and her example inspired all of us.

My deepest sympathy to the family. I am saddened by the news. Dr. Marais was an awesome Professor and taught me so much being in the Social Work program. Lorraine shared an office with me when she first arrived in Hawaii.  I got to know her pretty well, and found her a lovely and lively person, with a  good sense of humor and great outlook on life.  I am not sure her time here was all that wonderful, but I was sorry to learn she left, and now that we have lost her altogether.  My condolences to her family.  

Lorraine was one of my best friends on the faculty at Radford University and  a friend for life. Her spirituality, warmth, and easy laughter made her special.  She was an inspiration and brought Light to our work.  I loved hearing stories about her  work in South Africa.  I know she has joined the angels.

I will always remember my cohort’s trip to South Africa with the social work program. I couldn’t go because I was a non-traditional student, a single Mother of 8 year old. But, I was still able to participate in helping the children of South Africa. At the time of the trip additional luggage cost $25.00 a piece and we were bringing supplies by suitcase. In an effort to enable my classmates to bring extra luggage I recruited  people to “adopt a suitcase” for the trip. This is my fondest memory of my time spent with you as my professor. RIP.

It was truly an honor and privilege to have had you as my professor at HPU BSW program in 2013. Your passion and love for the social work profession was evident. It brings me so much joy to know I was able to learn from the BEST; you were such an easy person to speak with. It was a pleasure having Dr. Marais as a professor. I was one of her students at HPU when I started grad school for my MSW. It was obvious that she was passionate in the field and cared so much for the work that she does especially when teaching her students. While I moved out of state, I kept in contact with her through the years and was saddened to hear about her well being. You have touched the hearts of many and will be missed. Thank you for everything Dr. Marais. Rest in Paradise. 

It is with great honor to say that I am among many students who were taught and learned from Dr. Marais. She was a great teacher, sharing her knowledge was with no doubt one of her passions.

I remember you as a great professor at HPU. Your smile and laughter was heart warming and I loved the way you talked lovingly about your family. I will also always remember the story about how you chose to place your dragon tattoo on your hand. You said you wanted it in a place you could always see it! Nothing made more sense than that! You will be truly missed. 

My deepest condolences.  I was so blessed to have Dr. Marais as a teacher, mentor, and a friend.  When I met her I was a scared single parent starting a masters program and had so many bumps in my journey but she never gave up on me and thanks to her I finished, I am no longer scared and I now have my own private practice.  She will never be forgotten.  In Hawaiian culture we never say goodbye we say until we meet again.  Mahalo and Ahui Hou Dr. Marais.

My heart breaks to read this news. My memories of Dr. Marais have all been so wonderful. I can hear her gentle voice in my head and imagine her smiles as I remember how she taught her social work classes with both mastery and sincerity. Such a thoughtful, remarkable teacher and kind human being. May her family find love and support, and comfort in coming to know all the people around the world she’s touched and taught.

To the family of Dr. Marais, I am saddened to hear the passing of our professor.  My deepest sympathies to the family... 

Dr. Marais was truly a remarkable professor. She was the example of a true hearted Social Worker. She has taught me how to think beyond the surface and showed us how big of an impact one person can make in the field.
