Leo James Miner of Portland passed at the age of 91 Wednesday Sept 27th peacefully at his home. Leo is survived by wife Kay, daughters Lesley (Ric) & Lindy (Mark) grandchildren Steven, Forrest & Kasey. Leo & Kay were married in 1952 in Portland. Leo was born Sept 8, 1926 in Portland. He attended Benson High School. After high school he and his 2 brothers served in the Pacific during WWII. He laughed once about all 3 brothers finding one another in the same port in the Pacific. After the war he signed on to the Merchant Marines. In 5 years he sailed all over the world. Leo settled back in Portland at Shell Oil. He attended Portland State for two years while working for Shell Oil in Portland. He loved his time at Shell and kept in touch over the years with his friends at Shell. In 1975 he started his own Shell jobber oil company called Miners Oil. It was truly a family business as Leo did the work in the field and Kay & Lesley did the work in the office. He could drive most any street in Woodstock and tell you who owned the gas station on every corner. He also delivered home heating oil. Occasionally customers would call him in the dead of Winter saying they ran out of oil. Leo would drain his own tank and run some over. Leo was a living historian of the Woodstock neighborhood. He liked to say you could have bought a lot across the street from his house for $100. He knew every back alley and shortcut in the area. He could look at a building and tell you who owned the business now and prior. Leo was a proud member of Woodstock Kiwanis serving as President in 1977., He enjoyed an Oregon City Elk’s membership too. After selling his company in 1989 he dabbled in several ventures. For several years he drove a tour bus across the country for Rentrak. He also drove for Market Transport, Funtastic shows and Budget rentals. He was also a regular at Claremont golf course. Woodstock has lost a giant of a man.
