While still in high school, Julia met Albert Hammond. They met at a dance in Scappoose, Oregon. The two were married in August of 1947. The couple was blessed with two sons, Gerald and Robert. They were married for 70 happy years before Albert passed away. Julia and Albert used to love going dancing together. Later in life, they became avid golfers and were members of Orenco Woods Golf Club. Even after they were unable to golf they still enjoyed meeting their golf buddies for a game of cards or some lunch.
Julia enjoyed a long career as a hairdresser. She was a classy woman with a keen sense of fashion. She enjoyed family get-togethers and the family spent much time together camping and fishing. Julia was just as good of a cook with a camp stove as she was at home, even cooking on a campfire on several hiking trips. Julia loved various social gatherings; especially playing cards and eating out. Her favorite event was the yearly crab-fest at Reedville Café where she enjoyed her beloved crab bisque.
Julia would want to be remembered as the amazing hostess she was. She shown her brightest surrounded by family and friends. She threw many holiday gatherings where she always made everyone feel right at home.
In their later years Julia and Albert moved into Avamere of Hillsboro. Julia spent every day at Albert’s side holding his hand. She also made a point to check in on the staff as well as her fellow residents; always concerned about everyone’s well-being. The staff looked forward to visits with Julia where they were lovingly referred to as “her girls.” The family wishes to thank the staff of Avamere for their wonderful and compassionate care of both Albert and Julia over the past few years.
Julia is preceded in death by her spouse, Albert Hammond; parents, Ralph and Opal Gerking; and her brother, Ralph E Gerking, who was killed in a robbery while working at the West Union Grocery in the early 90's.
Survivors include her sons Robert and Gerald Hammond; granddaughter, Katie Standish; and her sister Mary Lou, who currently resides at a care facility in McMinnville, Oregon.
A celebration of Julia’s life will take place at Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at 12pm.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.skylinememorialgardens.com for the Hammond family.
