John F. Duggan, devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully November 21, 2010 at Cedar Highlands Care in Vancouver, WA. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lucile, daughter Kathy, son Gary, and grandchildren Jennifer, Matthew, Benjamin and Joy. He was preceded in death by his sons Ronald and Kevin, brothers James, Edward and Richard, sisters Pauline, Evelyn and Dorothy, and parents John and Albertina.
John was born December 13, 1927 in Girard, Kansas , the youngest of seven children. He moved with his family to Vancouver, Washington, attending and graduating from Fort Vancouver High School. In 1946 John met his future wife and life partner, Lucile Soderlund, They were married August 15, 1946 in Longview, Washington.
Following the birth of their first child, Gary, in 1948, the new family moved to Portland, settling in a small bungalow in the Woodstock district. In 1955, twins Kathy and Kevin were born, necessitating a move to a larger home, also in S.E. Portland. This was followed by moves to N.E. Portland and Springfield, Oregon, finally settling in Gladstone, Oregon, where the spent over thirty years.
The majority of John’s career was spent in the newspaper industry. He started at the Oregon Journal as dealer and eventually moved over to the Oregonian. John was a Zone Manager for the Circulation Department when he retired after more than 30 years of service.
During his retirement John enjoyed traveling with his wife Lucile, fishing, golfing and gardening. John was also extremely proud of his Irish heritage so it is no surprise that one of his most memorable trips with Lucile was to Ireland.
