John Stuart Barker, a beloved husband, devoted father, and cherished grandfather, peacefully passed away on July 1, 2024, in Portland, Oregon, at the age of 90. Born in Bowman, North Dakota, to Harold and Hazel Barker, John was the eldest brother to two sisters and two brothers.
At the age of 18, he moved to Springfield, Oregon, and then pursued higher education at the University of Oregon, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Business. It was during this time that he met, Eileen, whom he married on July 2, 1955, at Santa Clara Church of Christ. Survived by his loving wife, their union spanned an incredible 69 years.
John's family was the center of his universe. He is survived by his five children: Kathleen (Philip) Palmer, Susan (Verlin) Wagner, Diana (Peter) Berky, Steven (Jennifer) Barker, and Cynthia (Joel) Yozamp. His pride and joy extended to his 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, which he adored and showered with love and wisdom.
Professionally, John excelled as an executive in the lumber industry, moving to several cities during his career, making friends, and building his own homes along the way. Which eventually led him to settle in Portland, Oregon, where he fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a custom home builder in 1977.
His craftsmanship and dedication were evident in the homes he built across the city, where he not only constructed houses but also forged lasting friendships with those he worked alongside. John's commitment to community service was exemplary. He served at his church, volunteering for American Red Cross blood drives, and Medical Teams International, giving back to his community throughout his life.
In retirement, John found immense pleasure in building projects, nurturing his gardens with a particular passion for dahlias, and traveling with Eileen. Yet, his greatest joy came from gathering his extensive family under one roof, especially during the holidays, where his home in Portland became a hub of warmth, laughter, and cherished memories.
John Stuart Barker's legacy of hard work, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family, church and community will forever inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a deep void but also a legacy of love that will continue to resonate through the lives he touched.
Celebration of Life will be held September 13, 2024 at 1pm.
