Mom,
You have always been my light and inspiration! You have encouraged me to pursue my dreams. You have supported me with love, guidance, wisdom and prayers. I thank you with all my heart for being my Mother. I have always felt that I am blessed to be part of this family. I will see you in those you left behind. I will witness your gifts in myself and others. I will continue  to hold you close to me all the days of my life. Until we meet again... I know the Angels are watching over you.

In life and in death, Joan is my “second-mother,” and was one of my parents’ best friends.  They always admired her.  As much as I will continue to miss her earthly presence, Joan lives on through her legacy of kindness and her lasting positive influence in my own life, and many other people’s.  My love and gratitude for Joan and her goodness and friendship are without limits.  

There was so much more activity at the Daugherty’s home, that’s where I spent most of my spare time.  According to the grown-ups, (they told us that) as toddlers (around three years old), we escaped our respective homes.  Liz and I toddled down the street between our two households, met in the middle of the street, and immediately we (Liz, Joan and I) became best friends (from then through most of high school).  

One of my favorite recent “family moments” occurred during the last few days. Browsing through the many official Daugherty Family Albums, we discovered that during the first 30 years of my life, Joan had co-mingled my keepsake photos (of milestones in my life) along with the rest of her actual “real” Daugherty children.  One of the grandchildren didn’t recognize me today.  Several decades later, I look quite different from the old photos of me as a little kid, or a 14 or at 29 years old.  Joan honored and treated me like just another one of “her” kids in person and in the family album.  As my “second-mother,” Joan even coached me on how to cope with the “other kids” in the Daugherty Family, because Joan knew.  As an only child, in my “real life” in my “first family,” I needed to be coached about relationships and siblings rivalries.  

My best ordinary memory is how Joan would good-naturedly chuckle when one of us, or I, would confess something stupid, or silly, or careless on the wrong side of parental controls. In a spirit of independence, as children and teenagers, occasionally, we made choices that ended up as misadventures.  Sometimes, with a smile and a giggle, or with occasional disappointment, Joan would disclose to us some observation she had about us when we thought we had escaped her maternal radar.  

Joan accepted that we humans are imperfect creatures.  Yet imperfections and all, Joan loved us just the same.  With grace and wisdom, Joan provided me with teachable moments that served me well as a toddler to a teenager to an adult.  Over the years, I quote memories and experiences about what I learned from Joan and Jimmy, and Grandma and Grandpa Richards, and the immediate and extended Daugherty Family.  

Joan made the world a better place by being here.  Every day, Joan lived by her values and convictions with dignity and courage.  Joan and Jimmy were examples of my every day heroes. 

My prayers are with the “first family” of my “second-mother” as you cope with your personal grief.

Gradma,
Thanks you for all the smiles. hugs and kisses when i walked throught he front door. The smile you gave me always made my day. I know you are with your Jimmy in Heaven looking down on us all. I will not say goodbye, as I know one day i will see you again and it will be as if I had just walked through the front door and a smile, a hug and a kiss on the cheek will be waiting for me. Forever your first Grandson. Jamie

Dorothy, Will, Lorene and Peter, we are so sorry for your loss. May the fond memories of your mother/grandma bring smiles to your faces and comfort when you are sad. Thinking of you all.

There aren't enough words for me to express how much you have meant to me. Thank you for your love, support, laughter, friendship and faith. You showed me the importance of faith, family, understanding, forgiveness and compassion. You have always been a light in my life. Though, it's now dim you are always with me. I love you. Dorothy
