He entered into the military right after high school serving proudly in the Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and Air Force. Why switch? Each change came with big incentives. After leaving the Air Force he worked for Dorfile, a woodworking manufacturer. His final career was as a foreman in the Portland Park Bureau. He loved taking care of Portland’s many beautiful parks.
Jerry was an avid volunteer. He was heavily involved with his church, the American Legion, taught Sunday school, and was the first to volunteer if anyone needed help. His hobbies included gardening and wood working. He loved children, dogs, birds, Mickey Mouse, country music (especially Johnny Cash!) and traveling. Some special trips were to Holden Village, where he later returned to volunteer, Disneyland trip at Christmas for his granddaughter Kelsey, fishing trips to Mexico with Nick and many cruises and Hawaii vacations with his wife.
His favorites to send donations were his church, Augustana Lutheran and Holden Village.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Colleen, son Nick Benson and his wife Connie, his granddaughter Kelsey and little dog Betty.
