Janet Stenberg was called home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday March 12, 2015 in Happy Valley, OR. She was born Marlyn Janet Hamilton on January 18, 1929 in Albany, Oregon to parents William Wallace and Minnie (Hinrichs) Hamilton.
Janet was a lifelong Oregonian. She lived in Albany until she was in elementary school, when her father and mother purchased a grocery store near Hebo, Oregon. During World War II, the family relocated to Milwaukie, where Janet completed high school and became an avid roller skater at Oaks Park, participating in floor shows and other skating events. It was at Oaks Park where she met her husband, Edward, also a roller skater. The two were married on April 16, 1955 in Portland. They settled in Southeast Portland, and were members of Central Bible Church for over 50 years.
Janet worked in clerical roles for various companies in Portland, most notably the Spokane, Portland, and Seattle Railway in the 1950’s and for the State of Oregon during the 1970’s. Her hobbies included sewing, embroidery, gardening, and reading. She and Edward retired in the early 1980’s and enjoyed a long retirement of traveling and hiking in the western United States.
On February 19th of this year, Edward passed away, which was a devastating loss for Janet, losing her companion of 59 years. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Paul Hamilton. She is survived by her son, Steve and daughter in law Tami of Vancouver, WA and grandchildren Peter and Rachel Stenberg.
A memorial service will be held Monday March 23rd at 2:00pm at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Portland, Oregon.
