Jack Dobler was a native Oregonian and was born in Portland, Oregon and attended ROTC at the University of Portland before entering the US Air Force, full-time.
Jack’s initial flight training was in B-29’s and he later transitioned to F-86’s and was stationed in Okinawa for a while. He spent time at Moody AFB, Vance AFB, Hondo AB, Tyndal AFB and was later transferred to Buffalo, New York and later came back to the Oregon Air National Guard in Portland, Oregon. He was temporarily assigned to the Camp Adair radar station in Corvallis, Oregon. He was later assigned to Portland, Oregon. At that time, he flew T-33’s, F-102’s, F-101’s and F-4 Phantom II’s. During his career he was deployed to Europe to assist in NATO air defense obligations for the US Air Force. He later took part in several William Tell competitions. Col. Dobler was the Commander of the 142nd Fighter Interceptor Group from 1978 to 1985 when he retired.
Jack had a love for being outdoors in Central Oregon and enjoyed hiking, cross country skiing and fishing and occasionally snowmobiling. He spent a lot of time, after retirement, with his law enforcement son riding along on forest patrol on the Deschutes National Forest and spending several years helping to train 2 police dogs. Many of you remember Jack often had his trusty smoking pipe close at hand. He instilled a strong sense of honor and respect for everyone who worked with him and was part of the team. Jack was noted for being a firm, but fair leader.
He is survived by his son, David Dobler and granddaughter, Emily Dobler. Jack’s wife (Deloris Dobler) passed away a couple years ago and his daughter (Michele Dobler) passed away several years ago.
Jack’s funeral service will be held on Friday 06/23/2023 at 12:00pm (noon) at Holy Trinity Catholic Church 13715 SW Walker Road Beaverton, OR 97005. His interment service will be held on Monday 06/26/2023 at 12:30pm at Mt Calvary Catholic Cemetery located at 333 SW Skyline Blvd Portland, OR 97221.
