She was born into a large, but poor, farm and ranch family in Borger, Texas on August 8, 1933. Helen completed high school and went on to work as a waitress.
She met and married Billy R. Curtis and together they had 6 children (Carol, Donald, Teresa, Billy, Steven and Janet) as well as 16 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren, some of whom knew her as "The Great One."
She was a stay at home mother who was an excellent cook who loved to provide meals for her family, as well as anyone who wanted to sit at her table. They moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to finish raising the family and then eventually, Helen moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado as an empty-nester to enjoy nature and the outdoors.
She was a liberal, independent thinker who enjoyed analyzing situations as well as society's response to them. She was an avid reader who loved camping and the outdoors until eventually life and dementia interfered with that. Her memory will be cherished, and will live through her surviving family.
