Guy was born in Redfield, S.D., the first of five children of Joseph and Helen Bernard. He moved to Portland, Oregon, as a young boy. He graduated from All Saints in 1954, Central Catholic in 1958, and the University of Portland in 1963. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1968. During that time, he flew 125 combat missions on B52s as an Electronic Warfare Officer. He was eternally grateful not only for the fact that he lived to tell the stories from those years, but also for the patriotic sacrifices of friends who never made it home.
Guy raised three children and never, ever stopped learning and growing as a parent and as a human being. Throughout life, he loved few things more than simply gathering with family and friends to "chew the rag" and for "old-fashioned bull sessions."
Guy is survived by his family here in Portland: wife, Laurel; three children, Christopher Bernard, Melinda (Lepore), Drew Bernard; brothers, Jules (Andy) Bernard, David Bernard; and six grandchildren.
A celebration of life and services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, March 10, 2023, at All Saints Catholic Church. Military honors will follow at 12:45 p.m., at Willamette National Cemetery.
