Grace Kathryn Miller, 86, passed away peacefully of natural causes on April 6, 2025, in her home in Beaverton, Oregon—just as she had always wanted. Independent, self-sufficient, and surrounded by memories of a full and beautiful life. Grace lived with grace (naturally), strength, and a quiet devotion to her family and values.
Born in Tacoma, Washington, Grace spent most of her life there. She was the daughter of Ora Fay Milso and Charles William Hawker and grew up in a military family, attending 13 schools in 12 years while living in places like Japan and Europe. She graduated from high school in Germany, carrying a sense of adventure and resilience into adulthood.
She married Paul Arthur Miller, who served 20 years in the Air Force, and together they raised three children: Janet Miller Debely, Darlene Marie Miller, and Paul Joseph Miller. Grace later returned to school in her 40s to earn her associate degree in psychology and worked in child care.
A lifelong animal lover, Grace cared deeply for all creatures—especially the squirrels who visited her backyard daily. She would worry about them anytime she was away, making sure someone would feed them. Her heart was open not only to animals but to people in need. She gave generously to many charities and never placed much value on material things—except perhaps for her love of old cars and all things Elvis Presley. She was heartbroken when Elvis died, believing he was the first musician to truly reflect her generation’s spirit.
Grace was known for her wit, warmth, and strong sense of justice. She was a proud feminist and an early advocate for equal rights. She deeply valued her family and delighted in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her three children, 10 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Tacoma, Washington in June.
