She was born November 9, 1917, in Portland, to Otto J. and Lucy Agnes (Dove) Hoak. She attended St. Francis Elementary School, St. Mary’s Academy and the University of Oregon.
Mrs. Chewning worked her way up from the notes and collections division, to branch officer, to international accounts officer at First Nation Bank of Oregon (now Wells Fargo). She loved her family and her church. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, St. Theresa Catholic Church and Mary’s Woods Chapel. She was also a member of the Altar Society and Providence Child Center Guild. She was caring, compassionate and giving. She received a citation for meritorious service as a patriotic volunteer from the Portland Civilian War Service, and in 1989, the Mary Evelene Calbreath Memorial Award for outstanding dedication and sustained volunteer service.
Mrs. Chewning was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert L. Chewning.
She is survived by a sister, Marjoire Mottaw of Portland; four children, Gary Chewning of Woodinville, Wash., Paula Marie Biwer of Longview; Douglas Chewning of Lynnwood, Wash., and Mark Chewning of San Ramon, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Monica Smith, Jennifer Arthur, Erica Perrott, Heather Rasmussen, Michelle Hughes, Stephanie Biwer, Carolyn Biwer, Amanda Chewning, Tom Chewning, Rebecca Chewning and Stephen Chewning; and two great-grandchildren, Samantha Arthur and Natalie Arthur.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mary’s Woods Chapel, 17400 Holy Names Drive, Lake Oswego, OR 97034. Father Richard Berg will officiate. A viewing will be held at 9 a.m. followed by a recitation of the rosary at 10:30 a.m. at the chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
