Outsurvived by seven months, his wife, Ruth Gilbert for 69 years, the dance therapist at the Riverdale Mental Health Association from 1966 - 2006, who he cared for in her final years challenged by Alzheimer's Disease. She was an artist trained by Louise Nevelson and danced with the Salt Lake City Civic Ballet.

Mr. Gilbert died at age 90, succumbing to Fourth Stage Lymphoma, after joining the community at Regency Park Assisted Living in Portland, Oregon, where he was also cared for by Legacy Hospice.
His 90th birthday celebration in October, at Regency Park, was attended by friends and family, and featured his speech about the importance of community and helping friends and strangers.
His caring and upbeat nature was greatly appreciated by friends across the world.
