December 21, 1947 – November 24, 2022
Gary was born in Portland, Oregon to Leroy (Bud) and Margaret (Peggy) Ferrill. He graduated from West Linn High School in 1966, where he was a National Merit Scholar semifinalist, as well as the Outstanding English and Latin student.
Gary attended Occidental College in Los Angeles on scholarship, where he received his BA in English in 1970. He served as president of his fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta, in 1969-1970. It was at Occidental he met his first wife, Linda Martin, whom he married in 1972. After a stint in the Army, Gary returned to Occidental, where he received his MA in Anglo-American Literature in 1974.
Gary spent several years in the grocery business before joining the IRS, where he worked until his retirement in 2006. While at the IRS, he met his current wife Trish. They were married in 1999.
Gary was a voracious reader of books of all types. Others often benefited from his love of books, as he always passed them along to enjoy when he finished them. If you received a gift from Gary, it was most likely a book.
Gary loved family, friends, smart conversation, good music, good books, and good food. He was also a terrific lawn dart player, frequently taking the honors at family tournaments. He was a brilliant and kind man who did not know how true that was.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather Peggy and Shelton Lough, father Leroy Ferrill, and stepbrother Ron Lough. He is survived by his wife Trish Ferrill, his brother Scott Lough, sisters Shelley Selkirk and Terri Zuiches, stepsister Shari Guymon, stepchildren David Gross, Cassidi Gross and Stephanie Pace, and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life (going away party) will be held on what would have been Gary’s 75th birthday, Wednesday, December 21, 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm, at the Monarch Hotel, 12566 SE 93rd Ave., Clackamas, OR.
