Fred Chin was born April 19, 1926 in Portland, OR. He passed on July 8, 2012. He was the youngest of five children of Jim Chin and Lillian Wong: Billie Chin, Dorothy Mah, Jack Chin and Eva Wong Woo. Fred is survived by sister-in-law Nancy, wife of Billie Chin, and by 13 nephews and nieces: Pearl Chin, Ruby (Chin) Brown, Jan (Chin) Moy, Gladys (Chin) Rowe, Fran Wiegand, Bill Chin, Michael Chin, Norman Mah, Judy (Mah) Peters, Barbara (Mah) Norton, Ken Mah, Ellen (Woo) Lee, and Ron Wong Woo. He also has 30 grand nephews and nieces.
Fred graduated from Pacific University with a doctorate of Optometry. He then served in the US Army. He worked many years at Columbian Bifocal. Following retirement he became a day trader extraordinaire.
He was very proud to be a part of Portland Chinese community. He exemplified this by sharing knowledge, wisdom, and compassion with his family, friends, acquaintances and the community. He enjoyed sharing stories of the early history of the Chinese people and culture. He was a self learned man. After retirement he became a day trader extraordinaire. He also worked on perfecting some traditional Chinese dishes. He was naturally gifted in many areas and shared his wisdom with all. He distinguished himself with compassion and utmost care for all. He always thought of others before himself. He was known to so many in the Chinese community as Uncle Fred.
