Edward James Lowry died peacefully on August 28th at Grandparents Adult Care Facility in Portland. He was deeply committed to his family and his Catholic faith and was an active member of Holy Redeemer Church in North Portland. Edward was born in Sherwood, North Dakota and was the third of Henry and Mary Lowry’s ten children. Edward is survived by his Daughter Molly Sprague, Sister Coletta Gray, & Brother Charles. He was preceded in death by wives Delores and Bernice, and son Dan.
Edward was inducted into the Army in 1942 and served with General Patton in Sicily, Casablanca, Tunisia, Italy, France, and Germany and spent more than 520 days in combat during his tour of duty. Edward was a Medical Corpsman and received the Bronze Star for his heroic actions in successfully evacuating five seriously wounded men on April 18, 1945 on the outskirts of Nuremburg, Germany.
For many years Edward owned and operated the Ed Lowry Construction Company that was very successful building many logging and other road projects in Oregon and Washington.
Edward was good father and man in every sense of the word. He always did what needed to be done, never making excuses and never complaining about what was required. He was a loving and generous person to those who needed help. He possessed a sense of humor that could always make us all laugh and appreciate his good company.
Funeral Services for Edward will be at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Friday, September 14, 2012. A Rosary will be said 10 AM followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.
