Ed was the oldest of three children born to Edward Morris Lape and Christine Hazel Peterson in Hood River, Oregon. He attended Barrett Grade and Wy'East High School graduating in 1955. He participated in 4-H and The Future Farmers of America. He was very active in sports, lettering in track and field and football for three years. After graduation he enlisted in the US Marine Crops stationed at 29 Palms, California and Okinawa, Japan. Upon return he served in the National Guard in Portland.
When Ed met Donna Leola Griffith it was love at first sight, and they soon were married April 15, 1960, in Reno, Nevada. They moved to St. Johns in 1964 and resided there together until Donna's passing in Jan 2005.
Ed began working at The Portland Water Bureau shortly after Jerome was born. He began as laborer and worked his way up the ranks to water service mechanic and foreman and retired as Captain Hydrant. He was involved in the construction of the New Lloyd Center and the Portland Transit Mall.
Ed's love of animals was evident as he always had a dog or two by his side. His latest pals Sammy and Ella Mae were always happy to go for walks even though Ed could hardly walk the last 20 years due to complications from back surgery. In all sorts of weather Ed would suit up and take them throughout the neighborhood following in his motorized scooter. He loved to garden, growing vegetables and sharing them with the neighbors, as well as his colorful rose beds. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and motorcycle riding for many years. He loved craft breweries especially Blitz Weinhard! He collected tools and was a card-carrying member at Harbor Freight!
Ed and Donna's 5 children: Sharla, Marilyn, Jerome (Jerry), Shannon (deceased) and Kelli. 5 grandchildren: Samantha, Sarah, Simon, Sharola and Jason. 8 Great grandchildren: Christian, Isaac, Kyle, Thomas, Jenna, Lilianna, Jasmine and Autumn. He is survived by his brother Patrick and sister Dorthy.
