Doug died unexpectedly on February 26, 2021. Born in Springfield, Oregon, he grew up in Astoria and was the second of four children from Don and Fern Jacobson. Doug was very devoted to his parents and siblings. He graduated from Astoria High School in 1980, where he was a three sport athlete. He graduated from Lewis & Clark College in 1984 where he played baseball and football. He was honored to be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame with his beloved LC baseball teammates and coach.
In 1985, Doug married his college sweetheart, Lisa Re. Those who were lucky enough to spend time with them knew their marriage was one of deep love, trust and respect. Doug’s outgoing personality and love of fun brought Lisa great joy, and her unwavering support encouraged Doug to live his life to the fullest. They shared the same dreams for the future and created a beautiful life together. Their 35 year marriage was filled with laughter and wonderful memories to cherish.
His children, Ellie and Bobby, were his everything. He was so proud of who they became and the love they shared as a family. There was not one aspect of their lives that did not involve their loving father. Whether it was sports, vacations or their weekly Sunday dinners, their dad’s love was central, and his example led them to form beautiful marriages of their own. As their families grew, adding adorable grandsons Benjamin and Everett, Doug’s passion for planning activities, family trips and vacations grew. He so looked forward to spending the next years teaching his grandsons to golf and play baseball, set up the perfect campsite and to pass along his special dance moves.
Doug had a long and successful career in the credit management industry, working most recently as a Regional Credit Manager with Beacon Roofing Supply. Doug was honored in multiple leadership positions throughout his career, but his most valued assets were the lifelong friends he made through his work. His job allowed him the opportunity to travel, taking Lisa along for the adventure. He particularly loved the time they spent in New Orleans, Washington DC, & Tucson, to name a few. Doug always worked very hard to create a comfortable and secure life for his family, but managed to have a little fun along the way.
Doug was an avid golfer and a long-time member at Willamette Valley Country Club. It truly was his “happy place.” As in all his endeavors, he made and kept dear friends, and the Club honored his passing by flying their flag at half staff in remembrance. Doug was also very involved in youth sports, coaching many teams and participating on the boards of multiple youth sports organizations. His family has been so touched by the condolences of athletes and teammates from many years past and their fond memories of Doug as a mentor and friend.
Doug is one of those very fortunate people that knew how to live in the moment, relishing everything and everyone in his circle. He had a variety of pastimes and hobbies, and didn’t believe in putting off joy. He prioritized the now in his life, attending The Masters, the World Series, yearly trips to Bandon with friends, a cruise to Alaska with the Jacobson clan, and a dream European vacation with Lisa. Doug had a weakness for karaoke, and his inability to keep from dancing whenever music was played made him the life of every party. Although best known for his lighthearted antics, he also had a love for more elegant pastimes. He and Lisa traveled to New York City to see Broadway shows, and also enjoyed wine tasting in the beautiful Willamette Valley. Doug’s love of life, constant smile, and hearty laugh made him a treasure to everyone that knew him.
Doug is survived by his wife Lisa; daughter Ellie and her husband Nate; son Bobby and wife Meg; parents Don and Fern; siblings Dan, DeAnn, and Dave; grandsons Benjamin and Everett; and scores of dear family and friends from every aspect of his life. Doug was a true and loyal husband, father, son, grandpa, brother and friend. He will be deeply missed.
