Doug was born Jan. 17, 1941, to Harry and Marcella Feller in Portland as the youngest of four children. His parents died tragically in an auto accident when he was twelve. His sister Elaine and brother-in-law Leo Garrow raised Doug through childhood. He attended St. Rose Grade School and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1959. Doug went to Gonzaga University to play baseball but came home after an illness. He graduated from Portland State University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Arts.
He worked full time at Franz Bakery while attending Portland State and married Judi Jones in 1962 and started a family. He worked most of his career in the Electrical Cable and Wire industry as a Regional Sales Manager. His customers were major utility companies up and down the West Coast. Doug got his start with Reynolds Aluminum, which sold to British International Cable Company and finally General Cable. After retiring from General Cable in 2006, he continued as a consultant for a few years, retiring permanently in 2011 as he was having too much fun with his grandkids and garden. He was a member of the Western Electrical Power Institute and the Northwest Public Power Association.
Doug was an avid runner for nearly 50 years. He could often be seen running through the streets surrounding Rose City Golf Course and later the running trails of Glendoveer Golf Course. He completed the Portland Marathon in 1980 and ran 4-6 miles nearly every day until his stroke in 2016.
He coached his children for many years in CYO and Goldenball basketball, as well as Little League softball and baseball. In 1976, he coached Rose City Little League to the Oregon State Championship and a trip to San Bernardino for the Regionals. He enjoyed golfing and gardening and was a huge fan of the Ducks and Beavers football and baseball.
Mostly, he cherished his family and found great joy celebrating birthdays, graduations, and traditional Sunday BBQs at home surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He was active with the Knights of Columbus and had a huge heart.
Without fanfare, he was always helping people in need. These were often small gestures that went unnoticed by most but meant the world to the person he was helping.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judi, son Mark (Kim), daughter Gretchen, daughter Amy (Matt), sister Elaine Garrow, sister-in-law Marge Feller, grandchildren, Tyler, Evan, Connor, Aliki, Kiley, Carson, Noah, Olivia and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doug was predeceased by his parents, brother-in-law Leo, brother Roger, sister Carolyn and brother-in-law Jim Foster.
A funeral Mass will be held at 1 pm, Saturday, December 15, 2018, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 2727 NE 54th Ave. Portland, OR 97213.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made on his behalf to Central Catholic High School.
