David Myers, Ph.D., died peacefully on August 14, 2023, in the loving company of family. He was born in Spokane, WA to Charles A. Myers (Gilmore) and Gladys V. (Swartz) Myers. He was the youngest of three brothers. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ronald and Gary. While growing up, David was athletic, though he loved literature, philosophy, psychology, and jazz music more. He graduated from Gonzaga Prep. He met his future wife, Margaret J. Travis while she attended Marycliff H.S. in Spokane. David and Margaret married in 1963, in San Francisco. They had five children, 10 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren: Paul (Shannon McNassar and sons Patrick (Molly O’Grady and g.g.d., Fiona) and Ryan (Lindsay Love and g.g.s., Everett), Timothy (Julie Decker and sons Coleman and Francis), Patrick (Karen Solvik and children Julia, Steven, and Lewis), Kate Sacamano (David and daughters Annalise and Allison), and Rebecca McCoun (and son John Jr.). Margaret lives in Salem, Oregon.
David graduated from the University of San Francisco with a B.S. in 1966, and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Portland in 1971. David was a clinical psychologist for more than 50 years, and provided therapy and assessment services, teaching, and organizational leadership roles in psychology and in the criminal justice system. He was the president of multiple professional associations. He served on the Psychiatric Security Review Board, and several Governor’s advisory boards for years. He also provided consultation and psychological reports to the criminal justice system for decades. He taught college courses on leadership, trauma treatment, and the role of psychology and the law at Lewis & Clark College, University of Portland, PSU, and OHSU. After decades in private practice, he became a clinical director at United Behavioral Health, and then for many years at Kaiser Permanente. David was also the team psychologist for the Portland Trailblazers for many years beginning in the 1980’s and into the 1990’s. David’s passions were creating great loving memories with his family, being on his wild and remote land in Northern Idaho, listening to music, enjoying global cuisines, and exploring the mysteries and wonders of the human mind.
David Myers Celebration of Life will be held at the Hotel DeLuxe, October 8th, 2023 from 3PM to 5PM.
