Dad passed away peacefully September 7, 2018, after a battle with that monster, Alzheimer’s.
Born in Portland, May 8th, 1931, the son of Philip and Grace Sherman. He went to Franklin High School, playing baseball, graduating in 1949, then attending Portland State University for 1 year. He joined the US Coast Guard Reserves in 1951, retiring in 1991. After trying his hand at different jobs, he finally found his place at the Portland Police Bureau in 1959, as a patrolman for 18 years and a detective for another 13 years, retiring in 1990.
Married to Betty Smith in 1953, they had two children, Jeff and Lori. Dad married Marilyn Gallup in 1983, they retired to the Lincoln City area and Mexico. Before Marilyn’s death in 2002, they enjoyed travels all over the US, Canada, Mexico and many cruises over the world with friends and family. Dad liked baseball and fishing and hunting, earlier in his life and after retirement, besides travel, his favorite things in life were dancing, ice cream, chocolates and spinning the wheels of the slot machines.
Bruce is survived by sister, Joanne Schwartz, Gresham; son, Jeff Sherman (Betsy) Idaho Falls, Id; daughter, Lori Fitzgerald(Andy)Lincoln City; step-sons, Bill Gallup, Portland, and Corky Gallup (Karine) Wildomar, CA; step-daughter, Kathi Evans (Alan) Portland, 2 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by wife Marilyn, his parents, and brother Roland Sherman.
Jeff will always remember wrangling salmon with Dad in a dory at Pacific City, Lori - the daily talks at her shop and Thanksgiving at her home, Bill - the respect, patience and understanding, Kathi - the dancing everywhere and laughter, Corky - the love and respect Dad gave to Mom (Marilyn). Everyone will remember his quick smile and sense of humor.
The collective family would like to thank Jeff for taking care of the responsibilities, Lori for always being there day to day, care givers at Aging Wisely, Lakeview, Sunshine House, Coastal Care Home, Samaritan North Lincoln Home Health and Hospice.
Interment will be October 22nd, Willamette National Cemetery in Portland at 11:30am, all are welcome. In lieu of flowers consider making a donation to Alzheimer’s Association of Oregon in Bruce’s name.
