Boyd was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on November 13, 1938, to Roberta Pittock MacNaughton and Boyd MacNaughton. He attended Punahou School in Honolulu, was in the first 4-year class at Harvey Mudd College in California, and completed an M.S. in Physics at The University of Southern California in 1962. After college, he served as an Army Lieutenant at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. Boyd spent the majority of his working years as an engineer for Tektronix in Beaverton, Oregon. Late in his professional life, he founded MacNaughton, Inc., a company that explored new applications for 3D technology. Boyd loved life and tackled everything he encountered with his engineering mind, including exercise, photography, gardening, woodworking, cooking, and a plethora of other pursuits. Dogs in the neighborhood knew him well and eagerly awaited a treat from the well stocked stash of dog biscuits in his right front pocket.
Boyd is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joanne Roberts MacNaughton; brothers Duncan MacNaughton and Robin MacNaughton; daughters Mary Kay MacNaughton, Patty Bauroth, and Christy Palodichuk; his adored grandchildren Becca, Jasper, Bailey, Reuben, Chloe and Ryan; as well as his treasured golden retrievers, Kate and Duke, and his cat Zippy. He was preceded in death by his sisters Gertrude Taylor and Matilda MacNaughton.
The family will remember Boyd privately. Please join us in celebrating Boyd’s memory by doing something he loved: spend time with your family, eat chocolate, or give a dog a treat. Memorial donations can be made to the Pittock Mansion or Harvey Mudd College.
