Art was born near Webster, South Dakota on April 6, 1915. He was the fourth of seven children born to Alfred Olai Hedman and Marie Nalum. He married Otelia Juanita Steveson, on October 1, 1943 in Yuma Arizona before being sent overseas during World War II. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They spent 62 years together, as Otelia departed this earth in October, 2005.
During his childhood he lived in Astoria and at the age of 15 his family moved to Portland. He attended Benson High School and then, during the depression, he joined the CCC Camp where he participated in the development of many Oregon State Parks.
He is a United States Veteran of World War II and was pleased and honored to have served his country in England, France, Belgium and Germany from February 1942 to October 1945. He took pride in being a member of "America's Greatest Generation." Upon his discharge he attended the Plumber's Apprentice School and the Northwest School of Photography.
He was a very faithful and active member of his church and loved his Heavenly Father; and as such, served in a variety of church callings. Art particularly enjoyed serving in the Portland LDS Temple from 1989 to 2013: some 24 years.
His family always was the most important priority for him. Art was a hard working man. He claimed that he could fix anything, which he always would, especially for his 142 descendants. Art was a devoted husband to his loving wife, and faithful father to his four children, Dorothy Aurella Wilson, John Gilbert Hedman, Lori Jeneane Dickinson, and Gaylene Jenell Dunham. He has been an inspiration to his 28 grandchildren, 97 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing at 9:30 am and his funeral services at 11:00 am, December 7, 2019 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint Chapel located at 3025 SE 73rd, Portland, Oregon. Interment will be at the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.
Art was a great man and will be missed by us all.
