Alma Lydia Busch was born in Lincoln, Nebraska to parents Henry and Marie (Arndt) Busch on September 19th, 1919. She had four siblings: brothers, Edward and Rudolph; and sisters, Edith and Lucille. When Alma was very young her family moved to Portland, Oregon to start a new chapter in their lives. Their family was predominantly of German heritage and their family group lived a very traditional, German lifestyle. They did their own gardening and canning and much of their lives centered upon family, good food, working together, and enjoying the fruits of their labor. Her father produced his own wines; her brother Ed, was a German butcher; and they were “organic gardeners” many years before it became the popular phenomenon of today. Alma attended Boise grade school and graduated from Girls Polytechnic High School.
Alma was married to Argel Otis Stubblefield on August 8, 1943, in Tigard, Oregon. Argel was a U.S. Army infantry medic, stationed in Alexandria, Louisiana. WWII was in full swing and Alma traveled by train to be with Argel until he was tasked overseas as a medic in the Burma/China theater. Following Argel’s assignment overseas, Alma went home to live with her parents in Portland; she was carrying their first child, Carole at that time. Argel did not set eyes upon his daughter until his honorable discharge from Army service and the conclusion of WWII; Carole was already 18 months old. Two and a half years following Carole’s birth, Alma and Argel had a son, Tom.
Following Argel’s time in the Army, the new family remained in the Portland area. In 1957, they bought a home in St. Johns that was to be the family home for the next 50 years. Alma was a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker. She also worked outside the home from time to time in the retail clothing industry for B&C and Fred Meyer. The family enjoyed many special and memorable camping and fishing trips together. They also made many trips to Eastern Oregon to visit Argel’s side of the family and home of origin in Monument. Alma and Argel were devoted Eagles Lodge members and enjoyed dancing every Saturday night together.
Alma will be remembered as someone who “remained close to her main circle.” She was a very giving, social, outgoing, friendly and talkative person to all whom she met. She enjoyed long conversations with friends, new and old, and if you were a visitor to Alma’s home she made sure you were well fed before your departure.
Alma is predeceased by her loving husband, Argel (1998); parents Henry and Marie; brothers Edward and Rudolph; sisters Edith Kelly and Lucille McMullin; and last but certainly not least, her special dog, Molly Fay. For 12 years following the death of Argel, Molly Fay, the LhasaPoo, was Alma’s loving and faithful companion.
Alma is survived by her daughter Carole (husband, Barry); son, Tom (wife, Chris) grandchildren Christine Meeks, Jennifer Pixler, Karen Stubblefield, and Andrew Stubblefield; great-grandchildren Alisha, Yance, Rowen, Tristan, Alec, Mattie, Will, and Katia; and two great-great granddaughters, Bailie and Hunter.
Alma will be privately laid to rest in Skyline Memorial Gardens, Garden of the Good Shepherd, in Portland, OR. A private service will be held to celebrate Alma's life and memory. Please visit her Internet memorial and online guestbook at www.skylinememorialgardens.com.
