Allen Siu Fun Chan was born on June 26th, 1953 in Hong Kong to a shopkeeper and his wife. The third of five children, his childhood was filled with a love of comic books, cinema, and swimming. He had a nickname of Little Elvis when he was a young man, due to the pompadour style of his hair.
Allen met his future wife, Shuk Kan Pang, at a young age due to their family shops being next door to each other. They started dating in 1977 and got engaged in 1979 right before Allen moved to America at the age of 26.
After settling in SE Portland, Allen found work as a cook, a profession he remained in the rest of his life. He returned to Hong Kong in 1980 to marry his fiancée and then split his time between Hong Kong and Portland until 1985, when the whole family made the move to Portland. Their first daughter, Michelle, was born in 1982 in Hong Kong. The family grew in 1989 with the arrival of their 2nd daughter, Ashley.
While a quiet man, Allen had many interests and hobbies. He loved the NBA and was an avid Portland Trailblazer fan. He loved movies, especially science fiction. He enjoyed trips to Canada and taking cruises, and never met a noodle he didn’t like.
The biggest love of Allen’s life was his grandchildren, Sophia, 6, and Anna, 2. He relished his role as a grandfather and enjoyed spending his free time with them and spreading his love of dim sum. He never refused them a gift or treat and was proud of how smart they were.
In January of 2018, Allen was diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. His fight with this disease only lasted a short 9 weeks. Allen passed in his home on March 24, with his wife and two daughters by his side.
He was a husband, a father, a brother, an uncle, a grandfather, a friend, a co-worker, and he will be missed.
