Albert Van Mouton, affectionately known as Dad, Al, Van, and Uncle Van was born in Kaplan, La on August 22, 1948 to the union of Memphis Sr. and Gladys Mouton. Born and raised in Kaplan, Albert was a graduate of James A. Herod High School in Abbeville, La. In 1969, Albert decided to join the United State Army where he served in the Vietnam War. Following his service in Vietnam, he was honored for saving the lives of Vietnamese children during the war. After leaving the army, he returned home to Kaplan where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service. After years in Kaplan, Albert decided to make a change in his life by moving to Portland, Oregon. There he began working for the United States Department of Energy at Bonneville Power. In 2007, after 32 years of service, Albert decided to retire. Albert Van Mouton departed this life on Friday, October 30, 2015 in Portland, Oregon.
Albert was a loving father of two sons and a father figure to many including two step children. He had a big heart and was always willing to offer a helping hand, words of encouragement, or advice to those in need. During his leisure time, Albert enjoyed playing golf and watching it on television. He also loved spending time with family and friends in his garage where they would listen to Zydeco music and B.B. King. It was not rare to hear Zydeco music blasting and to see his dance floor packed with family showing them how they did it in Kaplan! Albert never met a stranger and would always greet everyone with a smile and a “good morning, good morning, good morning,” even if it was five p.m. He will be remembered for all of those things, but most of, he will be remembered by many for humming his favorite little tune, “do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do.”
Throughout his life, Albert received recognition for his work ethic. Those recognitions include; commendations for extraordinary dedication and monetary rewards for superior job performance for his at Bonneville Power. Albert was also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
Albert leaves to cherish his loving memory, his two sons; Eric J. Mouton of Abbeville, La and Dameion Grant of Sherwood, Oregon, two step children; Jonte Williams Sr. of Eugene, Oregon, Mozilla Bryan of Beaverton, Oregon, and one granddaughter LaKasha Mouton; one brother, Melvin Mouton of Las Vegas, Nevada and eight sisters; Gail Scott of Portland, Oregon, Gilda Abah of Las Vegas, Nevada, Phyllis Baker (Isaac) of Los Angeles, California, Brenda M. Hebert, Barbara Mouton, Denise Huntsberry (Oris), Deborah Powell (Jacob), and Jennifer M. Hebert all of Kaplan, Louisiana. Three aunts; Leona Antoine (Wilbert) of Portland, Oregon, Annie Mae Bessard and Mary Turner of Kaplan, Louisiana, one great aunt, Laura Elzy of Las Vegas, Nevada, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Memphis Sr. and Gladys Mouton, two brothers; Memphis Mouton Jr. and Milton Mouton. His paternal grandparents, Willie Sr. and Rose Mouton and his maternal grandparents Everette Turner Sr. and Alex and Fannie Campbell.
