When Al was 19, he enlisted in the Army. He fought for his country by serving in Vietnam. Two years later, Al moved to Washington state to be with his family. He worked at Boeing in Seattle, WA, and a few years later, he got his teaching degree. He then moved to Centralia and Chelais Washington where he met Vickie, who he later married. She gave him four step-children whom he loved dearly. Al and Vickie later divorced but Al still loved his step-children with his whole heart.
Later in life, Al ran a gas station and even owned one during his time there. He then moved on to owning a trucking company which he was extremely passionate about. There was never a car that Al couldn’t fix. Whether it be an older car, a newer car, or even a hearse, Al was always up for the challenge. After growing his trucking company, he sold it and became a delivery driver service for heavy duty equipment parts, a job that he would continue up until retirement in 2020.
Al was married twice, but with little no to record of his first wife. Al met Noel Hamilton during his travels and he inspired him to move to Oregon in the 90’s. They both fell in love and married shortly after. They lived together for years until Noel unfortunately passed away. Al became a widower until 2008.
In 2008, Al met his soulmate, Todd Lewis. He went to the same bar he had been going to for quite a while but this time, he met someone that he knew he couldn’t let go of. Al and Todd became inseparable. They began dating shortly after meeting, which became the beginning of a nearly 16 year love story.
Al was good at a lot of things but he would have liked to be remembered for what a good friend he was. He valued his friendships and relationships more than anything else in his life. Everyone around him knew they could rely on him. Al always felt proud to be a step-father, uncle, friend, and partner. The connections he made throughout his life were more important to him than anything else.
Al is survived by his partner, Todd Lewis, his nephew, Tim Weis, his sister, Nancy, his 4 step-children, and the rest of his loving family, including his friends, who he considered his chosen family. He is predeceased by his two older sisters, Donna and Roxanne, his father, Gene Hawkins, and his mother, Clarice Hawkins.
Al’s family would like to invite friends and family to join them for a memorial service at Washington Lodge #46 at 3612 SE 52nd Ave, Portland, OR 97206 on September 7, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. All are welcome to come share memories and to honor the life that Al lived.
