William D. Wood, 84, passed away on November 16, 2012 at the Springbrook Health Care Center after a period of declining health. He was born on May 9, 1928 to Edgar J. Wood and Edna L. Wood in Quincy, MA. He grew up in Greenfield, MA and graduated from High School there in 1947. Bill served in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Greenland. While in Greenland he helped to build an airstrip. Bill moved to Maine and married Ellen J. Manning on May 2, 1953 and he spent his life with her and their four children in Falmouth, ME. Bill worked in the construction business all his life. He spent many years working for Cook Concrete and Blue Rock Industries, eventually retiring from Blue Rock in his 70”s. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending weekends with Ellen on their boat in Casco Bay. He was a member of the Falmouth Lions Club, the Casco Lodge #36 in Yarmouth, and the Valley of Portland Masonic Temple in Portland.
Bill was predeceased by his wife Ellen in 2006, and their son Richard E. Wood in 2007.
Surviving is his daughter Patricia E. Wood of Cape Elizabeth; sons, Robert W. Wood of Durham and Scott A. Wood of Falmouth, and their families that include 6 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
A period of visitation for Bill and his family will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Jones Rich, & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, ME; where a 1:00 pm Masonic service will be held, followed by funeral services. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery of Falmouth, ME.
Care for Bill and his family has been entrusted to the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home of Portland, ME.
