Portsmouth, NH- William P. Kelley, Jr., 96, of Kittery Point, ME, formerly of Portland, ME and Wakefield, MA, passed away on August 13, 2015 at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. He was born in Portland, a son of William Sr. and Delia (Flaherty) Kelley. William graduated from Deering High School and attended a local business college. He began working for Portland Terminal Company in 1939, a third generation railroad man. In 1940, he began working for the Boston & Maine Railroad. During WW II, he was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force and was stationed in Iceland. Following his enlistment, he continued to work for Boston & Maine Railroad with successive promotions throughout his career, retiring as Manager of Disbursements in accounting. He married Camilla M. Romano on February 18, 1950 and raised her son George A. Vanderheiden. He was a loving father to George. He and Camilla would have another son in 1952, P. Philip Kelley, who followed in his father’s footsteps and worked and retired from the railroad. William will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed baseball, travel and reminiscing about the railroad.
He was pre-deceased by his wife Camilla M. (Romano) Kelley in 1994.
Survivors include his two sons, George Vanderheiden and his wife Sharon of Wolfeboro, NH; P. Philip Kelley and his wife Karen of Kittery Point, ME; grandchildren, William P. Kelley of Kittery Point, Kate Heal of CA, Nicole DeBenedictis and her husband Andrew of Hampton, NH, Heather DeAngelis and her husband Derek of Bedford, NH, Christine Clermont and husband Matt of Nashua, NH; great-grandchildren, Toby, Logan, Tyler and Van.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Wednesday, August 19th at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 72 Federal St. Portland. Burial with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
