William Alfred Devou

William A. Devou, 74, longtime resident of Cape Elizabeth-, passed on February 30, 2023 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. He was surrounded by the love of his family, and the staff of The Tilton NH Veterans Home.

Born in Portland, Maine September 9, 1948, to Floyd and Phyllis Devou Sr. He was deeply loved by his family and friends. He was a proud member of the “Rat Pack”, and of the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians.

To know Bill was to absolutely love Bill. He easily lit up any room with his fiery red hair and keen dry sense of humor. Known for his legendary generosity, quiet wisdom, and devotion to helping family and so many friends.

A graduate from Cape Elizabeth High School, Class of 1968, excelling in sports as captain of the basketball, track, and cross-country teams. In 1969, he enlisted and served 4 years in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a Supply Fuel Specialist, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. He was honorably discharged and awarded the Air Force National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon.

He knew the value of hard work and was highly respected for his strong work ethic and loyalty. His satisfaction was in a job well done. Over the years he worked in various positions from driving 18-wheeler trucks to managing trucking companies which included: Allied Van Lines, Fox and Ginn, New England Public Warehouse and Transport, and New England Motor Freight Company.

Family was precious to him, but after them he had two lifelong passions. One was for running, the other was his art. He ran his life like a marathon, with grace and great enthusiasm. He especially loved training for and competing in road races, earning many awards. His dedication, endurance, and competitive nature often earned him top ranking within his age bracket. Love motivated everything he did, and flowed through him into all he created. This same love continued to shine through his art. A devoted self-taught artist with a natural aptitude for multiple mediums including drawing, wood carving, etching, and wood burning.

Bill is predeceased by his parents Floyd and Phyllis Devou Sr, brother Floyd Devou Jr. and nephew Floyd Devou III. He is survived by his wife, Linda Walz of 26 years, his first wife Janet Devou, mother of his 2 children, son Patrick Devou of Gray, Maine, daughter Mary Devou of Portland, Maine, brother Gregory and wife Debi Devou of Fort Myers, Florida, sister Deborah Devou of Windham, Maine, and sister Rhonda Boutin and husband Richard of South Portland, Maine, and many nieces and nephews that adored him. He will be greatly missed by his two grandchildren William (Mac) and Violet.

Relatives & friends are invited for a time of visitation on Friday, March 24 from 3 to 5 PM at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., where a Celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 5 PM. The Rev. Jeffrey McIlwain will officiate.
