At 18, Bill volunteered for service in the Navy during World War II. He was stationed on the naval destroyer USS Cowie in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters from 1943-46.
After the war, Bill married the love of his life, Theresa Mary (DiMatteo) Amadei on January 18, 1947. They were married for 63 years and raised three children. Bill was employed by Jordan’s Meats for most of his working life until he retired in 1987. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Bill was a coin collector, but was known for his sizable collection of baseball hats. Friends and family enjoyed contributing to this collection when they traveled or found a noteworthy hat. Most of all, Bill’s passions were his home and gardening, in which he took great pride and which gave him great pleasure.
Bill is survived by his wife, Theresa, of Portland, his sons William, Jr. and his wife, Julie Scammell of Falmouth, Robert and his wife, Gina Amadei, of Sydney, and his daughter Ann Marie Perron and her husband, Ronald Perron, of Loganville, Georgia.
His grandchildren, Elizabeth Amadei of Falmouth, Jonathan Amadei of Auburn, Stacy Smith and her husband, Dr. Daniel Smith, of Clemson, South Carolina, and Shelly Rinkleff and her husband, Stuart, of Kansas City, Kansas, dearly loved their Papa and will dearly miss him.
His great-grandchildren, who were fortunate to know their great-grandfather and will miss him greatly, are Tessa and Eliza Amadei, Adam and Annslee Smith, and Sean and Sydney Rinkleff.
