It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Willard "Mike" Hartz, a beloved resident of Auburn, Maine. Mike departed this world on July 7, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication that will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and community.
Mike was born on July 16, 1950, in Burlington VT, to his proud parents, Walter and Viola Hartz (Poirier). Throughout his life, Mike exhibited a zest for life that was contagious, and his warmth and genuine care touched the lives of all who had the pleasure of crossing his path.
A true family man, Mike always prioritized those he loved above all else. He is survived by his Daughter, Whitney French (Hartz), and Ex-Wife, Ann Bedard. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter & Viola Hartz, as well as his son, Kevin Hartz. Family gatherings were Mike's delight, and his enthusiasm for bringing loved ones together created cherished memories for all.
Mike's passion for sports manifested in his love for golf. Many friends and family members cherished the opportunity to join him on the course, as Mike's love for the game made any outing joyful and memorable.
He will be remembered for his dedication, selfless contributions and endless volunteer hours with his children’s school and band activities. He was greatly loved and looked up to by many students and members of the Truman High School “TNT” Marching Band, Taylor Michigan. Mike will live on within the memories of drumline chants during half-time shows.
In addition to his dedication to family, Mike was an Army National Guard Veteran, retiring as a First Lieutenant. He went on to build his long career with Gannett News Papers, retiring as a District Distribution Manager for The Detroit News in 2009. Colleagues described him as diligent, reliable, and always willing to lend a helping hand. Mike's commitment to excellence and his genuine care for his co-workers earned him the respect and admiration of all he worked with.
Willard "Mike" Hartz will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his genuine heart, infectious laughter, and unwavering love for those around him. He leaves behind a community that is grateful for his many contributions, and a family who will carry his spirit as a beacon of strength and love.
A memorial service will be held on a later date to celebrate Mike's life.
