Falmouth, Maine-Thomas A. Martelle age 76 of Falmouth passed away peacefully at his home on November 9, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was born at the Portland Eye and Ear Infirmary on February 10, 1939, the oldest child of Albert W. and Susan (Cardilli) Martelle. Thomas attended local schools graduating from Deering High School in 1956 and attended the University of Maine, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. He went to work for the US Postal Service in 1967, after a short time at SD Warren, and he retired in 2000 from the postal service after 33 years. He was an active union member and served as treasurer for several years for the American Postal Workers Union Local #458. He was an avid sports fan, especially the New York Giants and the Boston Red Sox. He kept track of a lot of players stats in his head and knew who was about to set records. He was a Civil War buff. He visited Gettysburg National Park and had seen every documentary ever published on the subject. The radio station in car could always be found on the 50’s channel. To keep his mind sharp, he would sit and do complicated math problems, always achieving the correct answer. Mowing his lawn was something he did frequently, sometimes 3 or 4 days a week. In his younger days he enjoyed playing golf and more recently he would hang out at Riverside South and talk with all the Postal people, both current employees and retirees.
His parents predeceased him. He is survived by his sister Marilyn Webster, his brother Stanley, and his five children, Terrance, Thomas, Melanie, Marcie, and Timothy. His granddaughter Danielle Toolin, niece Lisa Buotte, and nephew Steve Webster as well as several cousins also survive him.
The family wishes to thank Southern Maine Hospice for the excellent care he received during the last few weeks.
Friends and family are invited to attend a time of visitation on Thursday November 12, 2015 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM in the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. Portland, Maine.
