Thomas G. Doherty, 78, of Portland died Thursday, October 28, 2010 at the Gosnell Hospice House with his loving family by his side. He was born in Portland, Me. on June 12, 1932, the son of Francis and Bridget (White) Doherty. He attended St. Joseph's Grammar School and was a member of the Deering High School class of 1952. Tom was drafted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 2, 1954. Once he returned stateside he went to work for Hannaford Brothers Company. He retired from there in 1992 after 41 years.
Tom married Eleanor Murphy on October 20, 1956 and together they raised four children.
Mr. D, as he was known by many, was a true New England sports fan. He enjoyed the Patriots, the Red Sox, but especially his beloved Boston Celtics. He often thought he had a direct line to the coaching staff via the television. He loved to garden. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his special friend, Donna Mangino.
He was a communicant of St. Pius X Catholic Church and his family was one of the church's first families. He was also a member of the VFW Post #6859.
He was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Eleanor Doherty in 1997. He is survived by his two brothers, Frank Doherty and Allen Doherty, and his sister, Veronica Clark. He is also survived by his two sons, Thomas and his wife Doris of Falmouth, Michael and his life partner Linda Woods of Old Orchard, his two daughters, Kathy Buxton and her husband Jeff of Portland and Mary Ellen Doherty of Portland. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Crystal, Michael, TJ, Chris, Danny and Patrick and two great grandchildren, Ayden and Logen, and many neices and nephews.
