Falmouth – Stephen C. Ryder, 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 4, 2017. He was born in Providence, R.I. on July 8, 1930, to the late Helen S. Sheldon and Edward B. Ryder Jr.
He attended schools in Warwick and Providence, R.I. Following school Stephen served his country for two years as a military police officer during the Korean War. Following serving his country, he graduated from URI. After graduation, Stephen started his 34 year career with Amica insurance; working in Boston, MA, opening a new location in Manchester, NH, and then finished his career in Portland, ME. Early is his work career, Stephen had the privilege of meeting the love of his life Helga Asendorf.
Stephen was an avid coin collector, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing, and escaping to camp in the Maine woods with his friends. He was an active member of The Episcopal Church of Saint Mary in Falmouth for 50 years, an active member of The Falmouth Memorial Library, a long standing member of the Portland Rotary Club, and was happily involved member of the Mussel Cove Association. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
Stephen is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Helga; his three daughters, Stephanie Lumsden and husband Chris of Windham, ME, Shelly D’Alberto of Falmouth, ME, and Susan Northcutt and husband Allen of Mashpee, MA; his two granddaughters, Erica D’Alberto and Abigail Lumsden; a sister Polly R. Mendlin of Longview, WA; Several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and five great-great nephews. Stephen was predeceased by a son-in-law, Jack D’Alberto.
A celebration of Stephen’s life will be held at 2 P.M. on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at The Episcopal Church of Saint Mary 43 Foreside Rd. Falmouth, ME 04105.
