Stephen Anthony Costello

Stephen Anthony Costello, age 66 of Portland, October 23, 2017, my brother was called by the Lord to join him and enjoy the gift of his eternal love and care. In addition to being welcomed by all the angels and saints, Stephen was also reunited with all of our family and friends who were awaiting his arrival. It was the most wonderful way to begin his new life at his new forever address.

Stephen was born in Portland on March 14, 1951 the son of Patrick Joseph and Yolanda Alice Nappi Costello where he spent his entire life. He attended Portland schools, and had various maintenance related jobs throughout his life. For Stephen, the best part of any job was meeting people, chatting with them, offering a kind word with his contagious smile or making a good suggestion.

Our parents were devout Catholics and believed in the power of faith and prayer and being kind to everyone. In essence, that really represents what Stephen was all about. We grew up in a neighborhood surrounding the former St. Dominic’s Catholic Church and school as well. As a child, Stephen knew all of our neighbors and all knew him. As a young man, and for many years thereafter, Stephen would be seen at St. Dominic’s Church doing whatever that needed to be done whether it be sweeping the stairs or sidewalks, or polishing the brass, assisting on the altar, or even bringing communion to the sick or home bound. He did all of this with a big smile an open heart, and all in the name of the Lord. After St. Dominic’s closed its doors and no longer offered religious services, Stephen continued his faith commitment as a communicant of St. Peters Roman Catholic Church. For several years Stephen would prepare the altar for Saturday Mass, and frequently led the parishioners in the recitation of the Rosary. He also participated in many activities including the Annual St. Rocco Street Bazaar. Stephen loved working the bazaar where he had the opportunity to have fun at his assigned job, and spending time meeting and talking with people.

While still a young man, Stephen found another avenue to follow and strengthen his commitment to faith and prayer. He became a member of the Knights of Columbus, a group that represented and enhanced his personal religious beliefs.

Over the years, Stephen advanced in the Knights and in the past few years was an active member of the elite Knights of Columbus Honor Guard. He took great pride in belonging to the Knights and participating in both church and community events. This past year, Stephen was presented a special award for his lifelong membership and accomplishments with the Knights. He was presented with a Knights of Columbus sword engraved with his name. This special gift was the ultimate compliment to Stephen which provided a source of tremendous pride and personal satisfaction.

My brother Stephen did not drive, nor had any interest in doing so. You could see him walking all over Portland. He was a very familiar face in the Portland area and knew many people from all walks of life, and was always happy to stop and chat with each one of them. For many years, Stephen up until his death could be scene pushing his carriage which was full of bread and pastries that he picked up at local bakeries. He would deliver them to places such as Preble Street Kitchen, Salvation Army Rehabilitation Center, and to the Sisters of the Precious Blood Monastery.

His generosity, positive attitude and all of his daily kindness not only served as an expression of his own profession of faith and prayer, but also serves as an unforgettable gift to all of us. He will be lovingly remembered by family and friends as well as those he touched.

In Christ he lived, in Christ he died, and now he has joined the Lord in his new eternal home. “Amen Brother-Amen.”

Stephen was a former member of Msgr. Houlihan Council 2983, and a current member of 4th Degree Assembly #337 Portland, and 3rd Degree Council St. Louis, Knights of Columbus.

He is predeceased by his parents, grandparents, and many aunts and uncles.

He leaves his beloved sister, Agnes Marie Costello of Portland, and many loving cousins and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to a time of visitation at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home on Monday Oct 30, 2017 from 4 to 8 PM. Between 6 & 7 PM the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard will stand in recognition of Stephen’s loyal service to the order. Prayers will be recited 9:15 am Tuesday October 31, 2017 at the funeral home followed by a Con-celebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church 72 Federal Street, Portland. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, So. Portland.
