Poland, ME - Sheryl Eileen Houston Walters, age 75, passed away October 2, 2022, quietly at home after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born in Lewiston, Maine, May 22, 1947. She was the daughter of Virginia Catherine Thompson Houston and Stanley Elton Houston of Auburn, Maine.
She attended Washburn and Webster schools and graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine with the class of 1965. Sheryl majored in English and History at Gorham State College in Gorham, Maine graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Mrs. Walters taught at Poland Community School from 1969 to 1970 and from 1974 to 1999. In 1999, she moved to Whittier Middle School also in Poland. During her teaching years, she enjoyed advising the student council at both PCS and Whittier MS, directing plays and musical productions at PCS, coaching girls’ soccer and the PCS cheerleaders, and advising the students who published the school paper, the Pirates Treasure, at PCS.
Mrs. Walters was a member of the NEA, MEA and RSU 16 Teachers Educational Association where she had served as Communications Committee member, Negotiations Team member, Secretary, Vice President and President. Sheryl loved to mentor new teachers and was a member and chairperson of the RSU 16 Certification Committee. She was a past member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an Educational Society of Key Women Educators World-wide. She was nominated for Maine's Teacher of the Year in 1991, had been nominated as a Disney Educator on two occasions and was included in Who's Who Among America's Best Teachers selected by America's Best Students in three publications.
Mrs. Walters' lessons on Cooperative Learning have appeared in educational publications, and she presented Advisee / Advisor programs at both the Maine Association of Middle Level Education and at the Mid Maine Conference. She also presented on Bringing Art into the Humanities Classroom at the New England Middle Level Conference in Providence, Rhode Island. Her classroom was also highlighted in the State of Maine's Promising Future's Publication.
In 1969, Sheryl married Fredrick Carl Walters of Naples, Italy and Montrose, Pennsylvania. They resided in Auburn and Poland throughout their marriage. She was predeceased by her father and her husband. Survivors include her daughter Pamela Walters Oberg and her husband Christopher Oberg, her granddaughter Alexis Paige Oberg, her mother Virginia Houston, her sister Janice V. Houston Rawson and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Mrs. Walters was an avid reader who loved her flowers, photography, spending time with family, holidays, traveling with her husband especially to historical sites and warm Caribbean beaches, and beach time especially with her granddaughter and sister.

Graveside services will take place at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn, Maine, at 11:30am October 22. The family has designated Poland Community Church Food Bank, 1208 Maine St., Poland, ME for memorial contributions.
