Augusta – Richard W. Moore, 61, of Freeport died on Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Veterans Hospital in Togus, after a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.
He was born on April 17, 1948, in Portland, ME., the son of the late Augustus Moore and Ellen (Mills) Moore Schuelke. He attended local schools, graduating from Portland High School in 1966 and the University of Southern Maine in 1979. Richard served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and received an Honorable Discharge.
He married Linda L. Brett on June 13, 1970 and they had two children, Richard Wayne Moore Jr. of Yarmouth and Michelle Marie Moore-Ledger of South Portland. He was very generous and loved to tell jokes. He played golf every morning and loved to cook. His Whoopie Pies and Pepperoni Bread were often requested by his family. He was a lifelong Red Sox Fan and a Season Ticket Holder for the Portland Seadogs since 1994.
Richard spent his career working in the shoe industry, working for Quoddy Moccasin, Famous Footwear for many years. He was employed at Eastland Shoe Corporation for 25 years and at the time of his disability he was Vice President of Operations.
He was a swimmer while attending Portland High School and while serving with the Navy. He went on to become a referee and was certified to officiate at YMCA, US Swim, Middle School, High School, College and Olympic meets. He was an active member on the Board of Directors for the Freeport Municipal Golf Course, the Lewiston-Auburn Boys Club and the Planning Board for the Town of Freeport. He was involved in many clubs and organizations over the years, such as the Auburn Jaycees, South Portland Music Boosters, South Portland Swim Club Boosters, Westbrook Seals Boosters, Pine Tree Swim Club Boosters and the Lions Club.
In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by four grandchildren, Tabatha Moore, Caleb Moore, Caitlin Moore, and Caleigh Moore and his sister RoxAnn Russell of Louisiana. He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Wing and step-father Wilford Schuelke. Richard was part of a large extended family and is also survived by many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland on Monday, March 1, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 2 at 11 a.m.
Interment will be at the Veterans Cemetery in Togus at a later date
