Portland – Richard E. Joyce, beloved husband of Susan C. Joyce (Germaine) passed away at Maine Medical Center early Sunday morning surrounded by his loving family after several years of declining health.
Richard was born in Portland, Maine on January 19, 1932. He was the son of John Joyce of Spiddal, Ireland and Mildred Suddards of South Shields, England.
He attended Portland High School then entered the United States Marine Corps. His plans for re-enlistment ended when he met Susan, the love of his life for the next 62 years.
He became a skilled electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. His work took him from Presque Isle to New York City, including The Texas Towers off the Coast of Rhode Island. Many lifelong friendships were formed throughout those years.
He was an accomplished woodworker who made many cherished creations for his family. Every Christmas we all looked forward to his elaborate and magical Charles Dickens Village display, Christmas was his favorite. He had a love of the water, whether it be camping and fishing at Sebago Lake in his younger years of spending time in Sarasota, Florida with his wife after their retirement making new snowbird friends. The family cherished the time they got to spend together at Crystal Lake these past few summers, especially, this past 4th of July.
He was a devout Catholic and had a special fondness for his Saint Padre Pio and the Rosary.
Richard was the last surviving member of the Munjoy Hill Joyce Family. He was predeceased by his brothers John and Robert and his two sisters Millie Whitmore and Peggy O’Leary. He is survived by a large family of eight children: Karen McCallum and her husband John, Donna Bialek and her husband Donald, Susan M. Joyce, Jeanne Flagg and her husband Paul, Richard Joyce Jr. and his wife Julie, Anne Joyce, John Joyce and his wife Linda and Mary Beth Woodman and her husband Pete.
