Ray Allen, was called home on September 4, 2015. He attended schools in Camden and Portland, graduated from Boston University, and studied for his Master’s Degree at M.I.T, and his doctorate at Tuft’s University. Ray served in the army as a covert investigator for three years, traveling extensively throughout Europe. Following his discharge he returned to Portland in 1952.
Ray was a totally dedicated educator, beginning his career in a one room school house in Pownal. He went on to teach mathematics at Portland High for 22 years, and was instrumental in introducing computer technology to Portland schools. He was an all-around tremendous athlete excelling in tennis, swimming, basketball, golf, and table tennis, and he loved teaching them to the neighborhood children. He tried out for the Olympic swim team, and handmade a clay tennis court for Deering Oaks Park.
Ray will be remembered as a father figure to Harry Strother, and to Harry’s brothers. He was a lifelong friend to Arthur Lekousi and Tom Valente. “Uncle Ray” is remembered by his family for his kindness and generosity, helping with college funds, or anywhere he saw a need. He lived an austere life, often depriving himself in order to give to others. For years he bought Christmas gifts for every child in his neighborhood. Of paramount importance to Ray was the scholarship fund he established for PHS graduates in the name of his beloved “Nana”, Mabel Anderson.
Ray is survived by his “Aunt” Catherine Anderson, his nieces Elaine, Joanne, Karen, Jane, and Lynda, his large extended family, and many dear friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation on Friday, September 11, 2015 from 4-6 PM, followed by a brief service at 6:00 PM, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland, with Rev. Kenneth Lewis, officiating. Interment will be private at Forest City Cemetery, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Ray’s memory to the Mabel C. Anderson memorial scholarship, Attn: City of Portland, PO Box 544, Portland ME. 04112.
