Portland- Mildred E. Stewart, 95, widow of Paul K. Stewart, died on June 20, 2014 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. She was born August 16, 1918, a daughter of Arthur E.and Martha A, (Shepard) Selden in Le Roy, New York. She graduated from high school in Le Roy and from New York State Teacher’s College at Albany in 1940.
Mildred taught in Rockport her first year in Maine after marrying her husband Paul, a Portland Attorney, and then started a family in Portland. She had a 35-year career as a social worker with the Department of Human Services ending in 1992. Among her interests outside of her important roles with her family were reading history and biography and travel. She especially enjoyed her trips to see her family in Le Roy and visits to Annapolis, Maryland to see her daughter. The trip was often a combination of both destinations giving her a chance to see many bed and breakfasts in the Northeast and other historic stops.
Mildred looked forward to these reunions with family in Le Roy, New York where her ancestors had homesteaded early in the nineteenth century. Her family ancestors settled Hartford and then early in the nineteenth century homesteaded in western New York.
She was predeceased by her husband Paul, brothers Gordon and William, her sister Mary and older daughter Pauline Stern. She is survived by her son A. Douglas Stewart and his wife Christine of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, daughter Elaine S. Boothby of Annapolis, Maryland, son William T. Stewart of Portland, and son Philip G. Stewart and his wife Susan Garfinkel of Washington, DC. Grandchildren are Allyson Stewart, Michael Stewart, Andrew Stewart, Rickie Stewart, Mark Stern, and Peter Stern. She is also survived by three great grandchildren.
Mildred’s smile and ready wit will be remembered. She was avid and adept with language as well as friendly and generous of spirit. Others’ needs always came ahead of her own. Her career in teaching and social work are a testament to her caring nature.
