Mary Jane Dougherty Bakke, 80, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2016, lovingly surrounded by her family and close friends after a battle with cancer. The youngest child of Harry and Jane Thomas, she was born in 1935 in Portland, where she attended Deering High School as well as Westbrook College. She married Steven Dougherty in 1957 and the two were married for 54 years before his passing in 2011.During her life, Mary Jane was a prominent member of the Yarmouth School Department. After her retirement, she enjoyed spending time at Panther Pond in Raymond and Higgins Beach in Scarborough with her family. Her lifelong hobbies included traveling and gardening, and she always could be found on Saturday mornings working at the Farmer's Market in Deering Oaks. Mary Jane is survived by their three children, Thomas Dougherty and his wife Vicki, and their two daughters, Megan and Allie of Rogers, Ark.; daughter Jane O'Connell and her husband Brian and their three children, Caitlin, Patrick and Colleen of Scarborough; and son John Dougherty and his wife Patti and their two children, Brynn and Kyle of Jupiter, Fla. Mary Jane remarried in 2013 to Richard Bakke and with their blended families she is survived by three more daughters, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her daughters are Betsy Mohr and her husband Cliff of Falmouth and their children Ryan, Carrie, Patrick and Hayden, along with great-grandchildren Morgan, Kayden, Linda and Cullen; daughter Sue Doyon and her husband Dan of Portland and their two children, Maxwell and Sydney; and daughter Heidi Hall and her husband Reginald of Yarmouth and their children, Stefanie and Tyler. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Jo Anne Thomas Hall and her husband Rick of Scarborough, and a very special thanks to Danta "Danny" Gagne. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 24, at 2 p.m. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Burial will be private.
