Louise Gloria Vachon, 89, of Portland, died peacefully on Sunday, April 12, 2015, at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Residence with her loving family by her side. The daughter of Dorothy Pompeo and Louis Cavallaro, she was born on December 3rd, 1925 in Portland. She grew up on Munjoy Hill, in a neighborhood affectionately known as Little Italy, and attended Portland Schools. Over the years, she was employed by Uncle Andy's Bakery, Haven's Candy, and Cheverus High School, where she performed a variety of duties for the Jesuits. She was a proud member of St. Peter's Parish in Portland, Sacred Hearts Solidarity, and the Italian Heritage Club. Of all her accomplishments in life, Louise’s greatest achievements were rooted in the lives of her family and friends. She had a unique gift of making them feel loved and lifted by her presence. Her kind heart and beautiful soul was infectious and when she walked into a room, you instantly felt lighter. Louise derived great joy from life's simple pleasures – gardening, visiting with neighbors, family gatherings, storytelling with her sisters over coffee, dogs Moose, Kody, and Zoe, and the beautiful ocean views she found solace in overlooking Casco Bay. She could often be overheard saying “Walk with God”, “Stop and smell the roses”, and “Just have a half a cup of coffee” to everyone who graced her doorstep. She was an extraordinarily loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who undoubtedly made a difference in the lives she touched. She leaves behind anyone who knew her the heart felt knowledge that they were truly loved. Her family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks for the care provided to her by the staff at Life Choice Hospice and St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Residence, especially the staffs on Unit B and C.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband Wilbur J. Vachon Jr.; her son Wilbur “Billy” Vachon III who died in Vietnam; her parents; and her brother Frankie Cavallaro. She is survived by her daughters Karen Fasulo and husband Sonny of Portland, Mary Ellen Gillies and husband Chris of Portland; her sons Peter Vachon and wife Janice of New Gloucester, and Paul Vachon of Portland; five sisters Annie Anania, Laura Caminiti, Caroline Greenlaw, Frannie Porter, and Peggy Cavallaro; brother Louis “Sonny” Cavallaro; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and another on the way this July; and many nieces and nephews.
