He was born in Farmington, ME on December 14, 1929. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carolyn M. Phillips Leavitt; daughter, Susan L. Black of Windham, ME; and sister Marilyn Gorman of No. New Portland, ME. He was also proudly called "Gramp" by 3 Grandchildren and 4 Great-Grandchildren that adored him.
He graduated from So. Portland High School in 1948 and Gorham State Teachers College (Now the University of Southern Maine). He also attended Boston University and received his Master's Degree in Educational Communications at Utah State University where he made many lifelong friends.
He was a long-time resident of Portland, ME where he worked as Program Director at the YMCA and for many years in both the Portland School Department as a teacher and coach at Lincoln Jr. High school and later as Director of the PRIME Resource Center.
He also worked on several political campaigns including those of Ed Muskie, Ken Curtis and Tom Allen who was a member of the Little League all-star team that he coached to the New England Championship in 1957.
Once retired he worked as a volunteer at the Visitor’s Bureau in Portland and was actively involved as a Deacon at the North Deering Congregational Church.
He was an avid sports fan who loved baseball, hockey, football and basketball. He especially enjoyed watching the Red Sox, Seadogs, Mariners, Pirates, and Patriots play.
He also loved to travel and spend time at the Camp on Little Sebago Lake with friends and family where his favorite pastime was playing cribbage.
He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him and whose lives were touched by his kind and humble spirit.
A Remembrance Service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at North Deering Congregational Church, 1364 Washington Avenue, Portland, ME. A reception will follow at the same location.
